Book: The Inferno
Author: Dante Alighieri
Important Stuff: The Inferno is a 700 year old epic poem, and the first part of the Divine Comedy. Writen from the P.O.V of the author, Dante, we follow him on his journey, led by the angel Virgil, through the nine layers of hell. As we progress through the story, we are shown in detail the sins / punishments that each layer deals with, eventualy leading to a confrontation with Satan. I have found many similarities between the Hell portrayed in this poem, and the underworld of Greek belief. One such nuance, is the orginiation of both places. Dante's hell is organized in layers with satan residing in the middle. If we look into some documentation of the Realm of Hates, we see that it too is organized with many layers and passages throughout (I.E. The River Styx). Take it or leave it, the value of the interpretation lies in the eyes of the beholder.
